Prof. Dr. Marc Herkenrath

Prof. Dr. phil. Marc Herkenrath (*1972) became a member of the Board of Trustees of the World Society Foundation in 2004. He has been Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Zurich since 2017. He previously worked as a research assistant (1999-2005), senior research assistant (2006-2010) and adjunct lecturer (2010-2017) at the same university. In 2005-2006 he was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Research on World-Systems (IROWS) of the University of California at Riverside (UCR) and at the Escuela de Gobierno of the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From 2008-2015, Marc Herkenrath was the Senior Policy Officer in the area of international finance and tax policy at the NGO Alliance Sud, the joint advocacy group of various Swiss development aid organizations. From 2015-2021, he served as Director of Alliance Sud. From 2021-2024, he was Deputy Executive Director of the anti-corruption NGO Transparency International Switzerland. Marc Herkenrath’s research interests include development studies, social movement studies, international political economy, world systems and globalization studies. He is the author of the books «Transnationale Konzerne im Weltsystem» (Transnational Corporations in the World System; 2003) and «Die Globalisierung der sozialen Bewegungen» (The Globalization of Social Movements; 2011), author of numerous journal articles and (co-)editor of several edited volumes and special issues of academic journals.
